WELCOME TO KYGN
Why KYGN?
Kilimanjaro Young Girls in Need (KYGN) is a private primary and secondary school in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. It was set up in 2006 to provide an education for some of the poorest children in the world giving them a chance to escape poverty. It now provides education and support for over 900 boys and girls from ages 3 to 15.
Our Story
In 2006, Annamaria Kanondo visited the Mabogini area and was deeply moved by the number of children, especially girls, who had no access to education. While most children in Tanzania attend primary school, many in Mabogini were being left behind, often facing poverty, neglect, or abuse.
Using her own funds, Annamaria opened the first KYGN classroom in 2007. Since then, KYGN has grown into a thriving school with over 900 students, providing not only education but also food, clothing, and emotional support for children from vulnerable homes.
The school works closely with village Chairmen and local authorities to protect at-risk families, and in 2016 opened a safehouse with boarding for 50 children most in need.
The school is funded through small fees from the families that can afford them and donations from overseas sponsors. Volunteers play a vital role, teaching, offering medical care, and helping with construction and maintenance of the school.
What we believe
We believe that educating girls is paramount
Women who do not receive an education are far more likely to have a teenage pregnancy, have multiple children or contract HIV/Aids
We believe in the importance of local knowledge
Working with the community, not just for the community, is crucial. Our team is made up of strong figures in the community, allowing us to fully understand the needs of local people
We believe sustainability is key to success
Through the support of our local businesses and community funding, our vision for KYGN is as a fully self-sustainable organisation
Make a Difference
Every child deserves the chance to learn, feel safe, and dream of a brighter future. At KYGN, your support makes that possible, whether by helping to fund a child’s education, providing food and clothing, or sharing your time and skills as a volunteer.
Together, we can change lives in Mabogini.
