Future Plans
BUILDING OUR OWN SCHOOL
We are so proud that the
number of children's educations KYGN is able to sponsor increases year
on year, thanks to the generosity of our donors. However, we know that
there is a more cost effective way to grow in the future. It is our
vision to purchase land and build our own school.
The money which would
otherwise be spent sponsoring girls to go to local primary schools will
be used instead to employ our own teachers and buy educational
materials. In this way we can keep class sizes to a manageable level
(many local schools have over 125 pupils in each classroom) and improve
teaching standards.
Primary schools in Tanzania
traditionally teach lessons in Swahili, however, secondary school is
taught in English, making it very difficult for many children to gain
access to and progress at this level of education. At KYGN we start to
teach the foundations of English as soon as a child joins nursery
school and it is intended that the new primary school will build on
this knowledge, more so than most other local schools, dramatically
increasing the student's chances of getting into one of the best
secondary schools and having much better employment prospects.
Our intention is that once the
school is established we will be able to attract local families who are
able to pay school fees, which will boost KYGN's income, making it a
sustainable and lasting project; KYGN will always remain a
not-for-profit organisation and all revenue will go right back into the
project.
The new school will be planned
to have seven primary classrooms, 3 nursery classrooms, five toilets, a
kitchen and an office. In addition to this there will be a large
playground and a vegetable garden. The most suitable land currently
available is a 2 hectare plot in Maboghini, close to the current
(rented) KYGN nursery and office. The land is large enough to allow us
the scope to increase in size over time.
The estimated cost of the land
is 20 million Tanzanian Shillings (approx US$13,300) and projected
build costs are in excess of 19 million Tanzanian Shillings (approx
US$13,000). For more details see How
